About that Windows
warning.

KM Role Play runs on Windows 10 and 11 (64-bit). The installer brings everything the app needs — nothing else to set up. The first time you run it, Windows may show a screen that looks alarming. It isn't. Two clicks and you're home.

01 What Windows will show you

The first time you open the installer, Windows puts up a blue screen that says "Windows protected your PC". It looks serious. It isn't: nothing was scanned and found bad, no alarm went off. The screen means exactly one thing — Windows doesn't recognize the publisher yet. Every new app from a developer who hasn't bought a signing certificate gets the same screen. It's a form letter, not a verdict.

Don't worry. Two clicks and KM Role Play installs like any other app. The warning is not a virus alert, and it is not specific to KM Role Play — it appears for thousands of legitimate small-developer apps.
1

Click More info

On the blue "Windows protected your PC" screen, click the More info link. The screen expands to show the app's full details.

2

Click Run anyway

A Run anyway button appears next to "Don't run". Click it. That's it — the installer opens normally.

Don't run Run anyway

More info expands the dialog; then Run anyway appears. Illustration only — the real dialog matches Windows on your machine.

02 Your browser may hesitate too

Edge and Chrome sometimes pause the download before it finishes, for the same reason: the publisher isn't recognized yet. If that happens, tell the browser to keep the file.

  • In Microsoft Edge

Open the downloads panel, click the three dots next to the file, then Keep → Keep anyway.

  • In Chrome

When the "This file isn't commonly downloaded" bar appears, click Keep → Keep anyway.

03 Why the warning exists, honestly

Windows skips that screen for developers who buy a code-signing certificate — a digital badge that tells Microsoft who published the app. That badge costs roughly $1,000 every year.

KM Role Play is made by a small team, and we'd rather keep the price of the app where it is than fold a yearly certificate bill into it. So instead of paying for a smoother first impression, we're telling you the real reason for the extra screen and trusting you with two more clicks.

The warning also fades on its own over time: SmartScreen builds reputation from every person who downloads and runs the app. If the project grows to the point where the certificate makes sense, we'll buy one and this page will get a lot shorter.

04 If you'd like to double-check us

The installer is served straight from our public GitHub releases page — the same file every user gets.

You can also scan it before running: right-click the installer and check it with your antivirus, or upload it to VirusTotal.

Once it's installed, your characters and conversations stay on your PC. The app only contacts our license server during activation, and nothing else is uploaded — see the Privacy Policy for exactly what the license check sends.

05 Quick answers

Is the installer safe?

Yes. The warning is not a virus alert — it only means Microsoft doesn't have the publisher on file yet, which is true for every new app whose developer hasn't bought a signing certificate. The installer is the same file for everyone, served straight from our public releases page, and you can scan it with your antivirus or VirusTotal before running it.

Why not just buy the certificate?

It costs around $1,000 every year. We're a small team, and keeping the price reasonable matters more to us than skipping one warning screen — so we explain the two extra clicks honestly instead of raising the price to pay for a nicer first impression.

Will the warning ever go away?

Yes, two ways. SmartScreen builds reputation as more people download and run the app, so the prompt fades on its own over time. And if KM Role Play grows to the point where the yearly certificate makes sense, we'll buy it and this page gets much shorter.

Can I use KM Role Play on Mac or Linux?

Not right now. KM Role Play is built for Windows 10/11 (64-bit) only. If other platforms are on the roadmap, they'll be announced on the changelog.
